Old Kyoto: The Updated Guide to Traditional Shops, Restaurants, and Inns

I just took this book with me on a trip to Kyoto -- it was indispensable. I stayed at one of the ryokan profiled in the book and patronized at least half a dozen of the traditional shops and restaurants. HIGHLY recommend -- these shops and restaurants are hard to spot in the din of modern Kyoto. Not only are they wonderful to visit but it is wonderful to support local arts and crafts. I also took along Lonely Planet's Kyoto for info on when the temples are open, how to use the subway, etc. and any more modern shopping or dining you want to do.

I used this book along with three others on a recent trip to Kyoto. Some of the negative criticisms of earlier reviewers seem to have been corrected, though not entirely. But no other general guide (with a Kyoto section as part of a Japan guide) was more useful. I have some criticisms, but it is a useful guide.

Maps could have been more detailed (as well as descriptions of where things were). Restaurants were shown on maps but, at best, within a block or two of where they were. Addresses for restaurants were given (doubtless accurate using Kyoto address standards) but don't describe the exact street each is on.

This is an easy to carry map. It is a great product if you can read small print (which is the 4 instead of 5 stars). If you aren't negotiating your own transportation or walking where you need to read the street names, it is still good to see your relative position in the city and the proximity to other sites.
